Shelburne Farms: Third and fourth graders had a beautiful day for their Shelburne Farms trip! The sun was shining and everyone learned a lot about soil and erosion. Fifth graders explored the macroinvertebrates at the pond this past week. Of course, there was some mud and mixed in! Fourth graders created robots during math class. They had to design their creations based on some specifications though. Different areas and perimeters were required for different robot builders! We all appreciated the lemonade treats from Mare. We had enough leftover lemonade for everyone to have lemonade on our Shelburne Farms field trip! Thank you!!!! We love buddy time! We continue to work hard! Coming Up:
Friday, June 1: Ilsley Librarian visit to introduce summer programs, Book give away Tuesday, June 5: 4th Grade Fish release morning Wednesday, June 6: Lake Dunmore Clean Up Day

Above are pictures from when members from VSO's Ah Capella performed for Salisbury students on Friday afternoon. Photos below are of students exploring invasive species via an Internet Scavenger Hunt: After all the excitement and engagement with the Ban the Straws campaign and after Greening Up around our school, students were still wondering about how to continue helping clean up the world. We explored some local options and thought about our own lake, Lake Dunmore. How could we "Blue Up" (thanks for the pun, Addie!) our lake? Well, one thing led to another and students thought about the Eurasian Millfoil in our lake. They explored invasive species and the imbalance they create in ecosystems during science class, so due to a combination of all of these factors we are proposing a productive, fun day of cleaning up and enjoying Lake Dunmore! The Lakes Alive Association www.ldfla.com/lakesalive/ works tirelessly to promote a healthy lake that can be enjoyed by our community and the many visitors that also travel this way for all it has to offer. This association has a couple of pontoon boats and hires divers every year to actually dive down to cut and pull the millfoil from the lake. This year we are going to be able to participate on June 6th during their week of training. Students will be able to participate by helping pull the millfoil from vacuums on a pontoon boat or from kayaks they are paddling with experienced paddle guides. They are learning all about the millfoil, how to spot it, why we don't want it in Lake Dunmore, how it got here and much, much more! WHAT WE NEED!!! In order to make this experience happen we are hoping to have as many kayaks as possible on hand. If you have one or more and are willing to transport it to the lake the evening before or the morning of, we would greatly appreciate it. We are also hoping to have many chaperones for this day. The morning will be comprised of groups on the lake cleaning and switching with various on-land groups that will be fishing or engaging in other lake-related activities. We are hoping for good weather so we can stay through lunch (possibly a cook-out if we have enough adult lunch helpers) and then through the afternoon for some more fishing and land games. Third and fourth graders will be spending the day at Shelburne Farms on Tuesday, May 29. Our focus for this field trip will be geology and erosion. Please be sure your child returns his/her permission form and a $5.00 donation to help cover the cost of the trip. Parents are welcome to join us for this exciting day. The bus will leave school at 8:10 and return for dismissal. shelburne_farms_permission_form.docx Needed Items: We will be doing a lot of hiking at Shelburne Farms. Students need to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress is layers. We plan to be outside all day, so bring sunscreen. If it looks like it might rain, students should pack a raincoat. Shelburne Farms is a environmental program, they encourage students and chaperones to pack lunches in reusable containers and limit packaging. We need to pack in and pack out all of our trash. Students will have breakfast before leaving school and we will provide a morning snack for all students. If your child did not order lunch on his/her permission form, please be sure to pack a lunch! The Wax Museum was a great success! Students learned a lot while exploring social justice and enjoyed sharing their learning with an audience while dressed up. Thanks so much for coming! SBAC Testing Most students have completed about half of the SBAC tests that they need to take and will complete the literacy sections this coming week. Fifth graders are the lucky ones and get to take an extra science section the following week! Reading Students have all chosen mystery books to read during the next couple of weeks. They are working on book projects in school that connect to these books. We will begin our last round of book groups after testing.
